Look at the sickle fins on this stud yellowfin tuna! Randy Corely from east Texas caught this 158# yellowfin in short order. I suspect that’s because he was trying to break the fish off for most of the fight just to end the pain. His crew says I can’t give him many compliments or his head will get too big, so I’ll leave it at that. The guys went home with several more smaller yellowfin, many of which were caught on top-water, and a mixed bag of mangrove, red, and lane snappers.
Justin drove all the way from northern Missouri to come down to Venice and get abused, both by me regarding his new nickname and by this 100+# yellowfin. We saw plenty tunafish, but could only get a few blackfins on the popper. Finally, after waiting patiently all day long, we got into a good mid-afternoon bite. In addition to Justin’s tuna, we had 5 other nice yellowfin, some blackfins, and even a bonus late-season 25# bull dolphin. Add to that several leatherback turtle sightings and you end up with a great day offshore for the boys from Missouri.
Me and my buddy the Hirst heft up a nice 122# yellowfin he dropped the hammer on, catching the tuna is about 20 mintues. Not bad for a guy wearing an urban sombrero.
Mrs. Inga and I are trying to hurry up and finish out our alligator tags so we can take you guys fishing. Check out this spooky monster. 11′8″ is certainly out biggest so far. Inga, you reach down there and grab him. This one was toe tagged too, so we’ll find out eventually where and when it was released.
What a scamp! The boys with TMC contractors added this grouper to a mixed fish box of fish including yellowfin tuna, red and lane snapper, grouper, and amberjacks. The tuna fishing was a little slower than we had hope, but the afternoon bottom fishing rounded out the box. Hot fall action should be just around the corner.
